Project Socrates

The project arises from the observation that the scarcity of doctors together with the bad local allocation is a common reality in the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa which is one reason - and not the least - for unefficient health service.

In the country clinics the nurse is often the person in charge of the health of the inhabitants, keeping to a “Minor Packet of Activity” (MPA), described in details by The Ministry of Health.

Theoretically the nurse should be a graduated professional from the university, but in reality this is not the case: the professional nurses are too few, and they are concentrated in the big centres.

On the basis of educational activities our Association has developed Project Socrates which actually proposes to carry out refresher training courses for health personnel, located in country regions of Sub-Saharan Africa, with the aim of improving their practice when carrying out the MPA, and thus secure a basis health service for the population in the concerned area.

The project is conducted by a team of teachers in which - if necessary - the doctor is assisted by supplementary qualified personnel: midwives, nurses and physiotherapists.

The themes already identified, on which a special booklet has been prepared in the language of the target country, are:

1. Basis health care assistance, and health care information
2. Clinical examination
3. The role of the graduate nurse concerning the struggle against TB
4. Post-surgery assistance (addressed towards the centres equipped for surgery)
5. The operation room: the role of the surgery nurse and that of the surgery assistant (including the same target centres as mentioned above)
6. The traumatology
7. Sexually transmitted infections and the managing of these by observing the symptoms (OMS; Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità)
8. The education of the traditional midwives for the purpose of their conscious participation in SMI
The Project Socrates has already carried out several missions (Madagascar, Guinea Bissau, Cameroun and Senegal)
